Kashmir Hill, Forbes’ indispensable privacy blogger, posted this chart today, drawn from a survey of employers. Three things to note. 1) 95 percent of employers say they use social media sites to ferret out more information about job candidates. 2) If these employers informed these job candidates why they were dropped, Facebook as we know it might not exist.

That’s not because social media is bad for job candidates, per se, but rather that the sense people have that they are just talking with their homies would evaporate. It would become clear that Facebook is, in fact, a quasi-public forum in which what you say attaches very strongly to your identity. It’s the persistence that makes it different from “real life” and it’s the persistence that Timelines is going to highlight.

“Before anything else, preparation is the key to success.” Alexander Graham Bell

Preparing for an interview is essential and must not be taken lightly. Preparation is the most important step in the interview process. Interview Preparation is a service we provide to our candidates in better preparing them for their meetings. We cover the same topics for all candidates, from entry level candidates through Senior Executive candidates. Some candidates may feel this is very basic or unneeded, and others could be too embarrassed to ask. Be thorough with your preparation, missing one step of the process can eliminate and disqualify you for this position. In today’s challenging employment market with high unemployment, you need to be better prepared than anyone else.

The person who gets hired is not necessarily the best qualified, but the one who interviews the best.

Your success in obtaining an employment offer is based on a simple formula; part of your success is based on your past employment history and another part is based on how well you interview. Your past work experiences can not be changed, yet we can guide you through the interview process and help you to present yourself well.

Proper interview preparation will help set your self apart from the competition. Proper interview preparation will help you come off as poised and professional. Keep an open mind and get properly prepared. Best wishes for success. Please contact me if I can assist you.

The shabby-looking fellow’s appearance says negative things. It says, “Here is a person who isn’t doing well. He’s careless, inefficient, unimportant. He’s just an average person. He deserves no special consideration. He’s used to being pushed around.””

Secrets to impressing their recruiters
“Our motto is hire for attitude, train for skill. It’s important that team members are passionate about our core values and our mission. Know something about WFM and have a genuine interest in the position you are applying for. Do some research and visit a store if you have not already done so. Show that you have a passion for the job. Be able to give real-life examples, not just hypothetical answers. Review our website and talk to team members in our stores and find out from them what it is like to work for the company.” –Karen Vaglica, associate team member services coordinator, Whole Foods Market global headquarters

This is one of several questions asked to interviewing candidates at a well recognized technology company. See if you can answer it?

Interview Question:

Four people need to cross a rickety rope bridge to get back to their camp at night. Unfortunately, they only have one flashlight and it only has enough light left for seventeen minutes. The bridge is too dangerous to cross without a flashlight, and it’s only strong enough to support two people at any given time. Each of the campers walks at a different speed. One can cross the bridge in 1 minute, another in 2 minutes, the third in 5 minutes, and the slow poke takes 10 minutes to cross. How do the campers make it across in 17 minutes?

You only have one chance to make a great first impression. DON’T SCREW IT UP!

Take your time and make your resume look great. Remember your resume is a snap shot of you. If your resume is professional, most likely so are you. If your resume is a mess of run on sentences, spelling errors, no spaces between sentences, most likely you are sloppy as well.

Some believe a resume is a list of exaggerations, half-truths, embellishments, and misleading information. The average hiring Manager will be able to determine what is truthful and what is not. Every thing you put into your resume needs to be verifiable and you should be able to back it up with a story. Being dishonest will lead to the termination of your candidacy. I have seen individuals hired and then terminated months into their employment when it was determined that they had lied on their resume. Keep the information on your resume truthful and verifiable.

Lastly, share your final resume draft with four professional associates that are a hiring authority, and you are friendly with. Ask them for their straight forward and honest opinion. Don’t fight them if they make suggestions, just thank them. Evaluate what they have suggested and make changes if you feel it will help.

Best wishes for success!

Don
